In early 2006, RMIT University will host the fourth annual ICE-EM /AMSI Summer School.   The Summer School is designed for postgraduate and honours students in the mathematical and statistical sciences.  The program will consist of courses in both pure and applied mathematics and in statistics.  The Summer School runs over four weeks from 16 January  to 10 February 2006, and classes will be held each day from 9.00am until 6.00pm, except on Australia Day, January 26.

This year at RMIT University, students will enjoy a stimulating atmosphere and opportunities for the interchange of ideas both with one another and with the invited academics. This aspect has been universally praised by the students in previous years. The feeling of camaraderie and the opportunity to overcome a sense of isolation are among the strong features of the ICE-EM/AMSI Summer School.   There will be ample opportunity for socialising with other participants and the academics at the daily morning and afternoon teas, weekly BBQ lunch, welcome receptions and dinner.

At the discretion of their home university, honours students may be able take courses for credit towards their degree. Contact your Head of Department or Honours Coordinator for guidance on this matter.

Participation in the 2006 Summer School is by Application. Detailed information is to be added about the program of Courses. Accommodation has been booked at University College, University of Melbourne, for students from outside the Melbourne metropolitan area, while travel bookings to and from Melbourne are the responsibility of the participant.    Travel and Accommodation Subsidies for AMSI students are available upon application.  Enquiries regarding travel or other matters may be directed to amsiss06@rmit.edu.au.

The Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI) is a national consortium established through a grant from the Victorian Government and funds from nearly thirty AMSI member institutions.  The International Centre of Excellence for Education in Mathematics (ICE-EM) was established by AMSI to strengthen education in mathematics and its contemporary applications.

In 2002 the Federal Government announced funding which enabled AMSI to run a program of summer courses for honours and postgraduate students in the mathematical sciences. The first two such programs were held in 2003 at the University of Melbourne, and 2004 at the University of New South Wales. Following on from these successes, AMSI and ICE-EM ran a similar program in 2005 at the Australian National University in Canberra.

ICE-EM is funded by the Australian Government through the Department of Education, Science and Training.

Melbourne

Melbourne is well known as one of the world's most 'liveable' cities.  It is also one of the most international, with nearly a quarter of its 3.6 million population born overseas.

RMIT University is located in the central city, near tourist attractions such as Federation Square, the Melbourne Museum, the National Gallery of Victoria, the Victorian Arts Centre, "Little Italy" in Lygon Street, the Greek precinct, the Queen Victoria Markets and the Melbourne Zoo.  The nearby Royal Exhibition Building completed in 1880 is a World Heritage site.

Melbourne has a cosmopolitan ambience, with numerous restaurants, pubs, cinemas, theatres and shopping arcades.  Its many parks and gardens, its Yarra River setting and its proximity to the Dandenong Ranges are ideal for walking and biking.  For more information, things to do and places to go in Melbourne, visit: www.thatsmelbourne.com
