International Centre of Excellence for Education in Mathematics

The International Centre of Excellence for Education in Mathematics (ICE-EM) is the major sponsor of the ICE-EM AMSI Summer School.

ICE-EM is managed by the Board of the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI) and guided by its Education, Industry and Scientific Advisory Committees. One of ICE-EM's fundamental tasks is to improve Australia’s mathematical sciences skills base through improved mathematics education in schools, undergraduate studies and research training. Another task is to make studying the mathematical sciences in Australia attractive to both Australian and international students.

ICE-EM will fund a range of initiatives, including developing new mathematics courseware for delivery through a network of Access Grid Rooms in universities; providing professional development programs and teacher resources for schools; presenting intensive courses for industry practitioners and scientific researchers; and carrying out a national awareness campaign targeted at students and their parents. ICE-EM will work collaboratively with the Australian Mathematics Trust to develop resources for teachers, students and the community.

Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute

The Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI) was established in November 2002 with initial funding of $1M from the Victorian Government's Science, Technology and Innovation Infrastructure grants program and matching funds from a member consortium of Australian universities and other mathematical organisations. AMSI's mission is to become a nationally and internationally recognised centre for the mathematical sciences, providing service to its member institutions, improving the international competitiveness of Australian industry and commerce and enhancing the national level of school mathematics, by the provision and support of mathematical and statistical expertise.

Department of Education, Science and Training

ICE-EM is funded by the Australian Government through the Department of Education, Science and Training.

RMIT University

The Summer School is hosted by RMIT University, one of Australia's premier learning and research institutions.

RMIT University began as the Working Men's College in La Trobe Street, Melbourne in 1887. The university has grown to become one of the largest in the country and has built a worldwide reputation for excellence in vocational and technical education and research.

RMIT offers more than 200 TAFE and higher educational programs across a broad range of fields. Many specialist programs are regarded as among the best of their type in Australia. Traditional strengths such as engineering, business and IT sit beside popular contemporary fields including life sciences, communications and fashion.

Our 57,000 students study at RMIT campuses in Melbourne and regional Victoria, Vietnam, online, by distance education, and at partner institutions throughout the world. A vibrant alumni community now stretches across more than 100 countries.

APAC

APAC is a national partnership of 8 organisations, one in each State as well as ANU and CSIRO. It provides advanced computing, information and grid services for eResearch.

The APAC National Facility is providing a world-class advanced computing service to over 800 Australian researchers and graduate students at 27 universities and CSIRO.

The peak computing system an - SGI Altix 3700 - has 1680 processors capable of over 11 trillion calculations per second. It is number 35 on the TOP500 list of the world’s most powerful computers.

The APAC National Grid program is building a national grid infrastructure integrating the APAC and partner facilities to give Australian researchers seamless access to the computational and data resources in these facilities. The APAC National Grid is providing a new range of services to support research collaboration, nationally and internationally.

APAC is continuing its support for education, outreach and training, in order to increase the skills of users and potential users of advanced computing and grid facilities. The EOT program is supporting a courseware project which is delivering on-line materials for presenters of educational and training courses on advanced computing and the grid.

APAC is supported by the Systemic Infrastructure Initiative as part of the Australian Government’s Backing Australia’s Ability program, administered through the Department of Education, Science and Training. More information regarding APAC is available at www.apac.edu.au .
