Mapping Design for Form and Function
Good design on the Web is about the ‘look’ of the product
(FORM) and Speed (related to FUNCTION). And speed is related to
the FILE SIZE that has to be transferred across the Web. This practical
exercise focuses on the design and production of an effective Web
page that has been laid out to afford ‘good design’
criteria and also has been ‘assembled’ so as to ensure
that small file sizes are paramount and image quality is retained
irrespective of the level of ‘zoom’ that a user wishes
to undertake..
The topic of the Web page is again one of the major cities in Europe.
You may use the same city that was the topic of an earlier exercise
in this course. If you did not complete the previous exercise, your
choice of city MUST be approved by the tutor AND it MUST be different
from other students undertaking this practical. You cannot use a
city that has already been used by a student in the previous exercise.
You will need to capture the following items:
· A logo from the city being mapped.
· A map of the city. This must allow for a user to zoom from
the entire city into the very centre of the city. This will be explained
later.
· Two images of the city – one must be re-formatted
to be a panorama photograph. Both must be JPEG images.
· A list of 12 URLs that link to external tourist information
sites about the city.
You will need to draw:
A heading for the city – drawn in CorelDRAW and then converted
to a .GIF.
A map legend – drawn in CorelDRAW and then converted to a
.GIF.
A spatial toolbar logo ‘set’ of symbols – 4 different
zoom level symbols, and each in one of two colours. (The different
colours will indicate the zoom factor being applied.)
