Biography: Professor Zhang holds both BSc and MSc degrees in Geodesy from Wuhan University (former Wuhan Technical University of Surveying and Mapping) and a PhD in Geodesy from Curtin University of Technology, Australia. He has a mixed background of satellite positioning and geodesy. His current research projects primarily involve algorithm development and innovative applications of GPS and Global Satellite Navigation Systems (GNSS) technologies for high-accuracy positioning, atmospheric studies (for space weather, space debris surveillance and collision warning, climate, weather and environment and ionosphere),  and people and object tracking.  In addition, he is also interested in geodesy-related theoretical and practical studies such as Earth's gravity field modelling, satellite orbit determination, spectral and fractal analyses. He  has authored  over 150 peer-reviewed publications in these fields since 1990 and has attracted over 5 million dollars in funding from the Australian Research Council (ARC), industry sectors, and national and international organisations since 2000.

Professor Zhang is a member of a number of international special study groups and the editorial boards of scientific journals and has been a reviewer of the ARC, the Australian Antarctic Science Program, Canadian Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and Changjiang Chair Professorship program of The Ministry of Personnel of China. He has been an examiner of  PhD theses from a number of Australian and overseas universities, a guest/invited speaker at various international events. He currently leads the Measurement Science Group at the School of Mathematical and Geospatial Sciences, RMIT University.
